Description

An RS485 soil sensor outputs readings over Modbus RTU, so a controller or datalogger reads the soil directly instead of a person reading a screen.

Eight channels: nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, pH, electrical conductivity, moisture, salinity and soil temperature.

This is not a standalone handheld meter. It requires an external DC power supply, an RS485 connection and a compatible Modbus RTU master device.

On data quality: pH, EC, moisture and temperature are sensor readings, and accuracy is affected by installation depth, soil contact, moisture distribution and soil composition. The nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium channels are derived from conductivity rather than measured chemically, which makes them suitable for trend logging rather than as absolute nutrient values.

FAQ

Can you support volume orders?

Contact us to discuss volume requirements and lead times.

Can I get the register map?

Contact our team to ask about the register map.

What do I need to read it?

A compatible Modbus RTU master, an RS485 connection and an external DC power supply.

How accurate are the Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium (NPK) readings?

The sensor uses the FDR (Frequency Domain Reflectometry) principle to estimate NPK levels based on the soil's dielectric constant and conductivity. While it provides highly reliable trends and relative changes for smart farming, for laboratory-grade absolute precision, we recommend using it alongside periodic professional soil soil tests to calibrate your local baseline.

Can I leave the sensor buried in the soil for a long time?

Yes, absolutely. The sensor is rated IP68 waterproof and vacuum-sealed with high-density epoxy resin. The probes are made of 316L stainless steel, which is specially treated to resist long-term salt-alkali corrosion and electrolysis.

Does this sensor work with my existing PLC or Arduino system?

Yes. The sensor communicates via the standard RS485 Modbus RTU protocol, which is the industry standard. It can easily connect to PLCs (like Siemens or Mitsubishi), microcontrollers (Arduino, Raspberry Pi, ESP32), or industrial computers using an RS485-to-USB adapter. One RS485 bus can theoretically support up to 254 sensors.

Why is the pH or NPK reading not changing immediately after insertion?

For accurate readings, the soil must be moist and in full contact with the probes. After insertion, it typically takes 3 to 5 minutes for the sensor to stabilize as the soil settles around the probes. We recommend ensuring the soil moisture is at least 20% for the most accurate chemical parameter readings (pH/EC/NPK).

What is the power requirement and cable limit?

The sensor operates on a wide voltage range of 12V to 24V DC. The standard cable is 2 meters.
